Review Chapter 3: Audio Lingual Method from EFL teaching methodology book
Audio-Lingual Method (ALM) is a way of teaching language that focuses on speaking and listening skills. Introduced in the mid-20th century, this method uses the principles of behaviorist psychology, where language learning is considered habit formation. ALM emphasizes repetition and structured practice to help students quickly master language patterns.
One of ALM's strengths is its strong focus on speaking skills. This method is designed to speed up students' ability to speak, so that students can speak confidently in a short time. With positive reinforcement and direct correction, students can immediately correct their mistakes.
However, ALM also has some disadvantages. One of the main criticisms is the lack of attention to more natural communication skills. Students may be able to pronounce sentences well, but have difficulty interacting spontaneously in everyday situations. This makes them unable to communicate effectively even if they are able to speak.
Another advantage of ALM is its clear structure. Students are introduced to grammatical patterns gradually, which helps them understand the language better. This approach also improves students' listening skills, which are important for communicating in everyday life.
However, reliance on repetition can make the learning process boring. Some students may feel bored due to the lack of variety in learning activities. In addition, the dialogue taught often does not reflect the language used every day, so students have difficulty speaking in real situations.
Overall, the Audio-Lingual Method has advantages and disadvantages. Its success in improving speaking and listening skills is very useful, but needs to be balanced with other, more communicative methods. In this way, language teaching can be more complete and effective.
